Own Your Wealth

AWM Capital has become a household name in the MLB, and it began because our founders - as former athletes and certified wealth experts - were convinced that the traditional model of financial advice for athletes was broken.

They saw the stats that athletes are four times more likely to file bankruptcy, twice as likely to be divorced, and frequently end up squandering millions due to fraud, high fees, and unqualified advice. They heard the stories of athletes who blew through all their money before they retired, others who had been injured but didn’t understand how to get adequate protection, and even some who had made the right decision to hire a “financial advisor,” but the financial industry had completely failed them.

Today, our community is comprised of the trailblazers, the luminaries, the elite, those at the top of their field, and the best at their craft. We serve those in pursuit of elite performance on the field, in the boardroom, in their community, and everywhere in between. Those who understand the value of determination, perseverance, grit, and a hard day’s work. Those for whom passion and practice know no separation.

We coordinate every aspect of our client’s wealth; providing virtually every service you could possibly need. Our approach is tailored to the individuals who make up our community, and our team is uniquely equipped to serve our partners because we’ve been where they’re at.

Real Advice by an NFL Player for the NFL Player.

I will tell you everything you will need to know to navigate the complexity of preserving your cash so you can have long lasting wealth.

I did not grow up with any financial education. I did not understand the stock market until I was in the NFL. My parents owned a small business, but barely saved for their retirement, paid high interest credit card debt, and took out second mortgages.

Based on my personal experience, I want to give athletes the game plan for generational wealth. Athletes are often exploited or underserved because of their inexperience in managing their finances.

“I have more real life experience than any other advisor in the NFL. I am in it for the long haul, our relationship will be for life.”

-Zach Miller

  • Successful NFL career: 8 years in the NFL, Super Bowl champ, and Pro Bowler.

  • NFLPA Rep for 7 years.

  • Cut from Seahawks with injury designation ending my career (15 points for the stingy NFL Line of Duty Benefit)

  • I have seen it all throughout the years and understand the complexities of what NFL players need.

What I’ve Learned and How You
Can Unlock Your Human Capital.

People who have shaped me and inspire me:

Jerry Rice was mine in football starting at a young age. He was consistent, reliable, and outworked his competition. He was not only gifted athletically but maximized his ability through his work ethic. The same traits I tried to embody throughout my football legacy. Lee Burhghraef at ASU, Tony Stewart in Oakland, both veteran tight ends that worked their asses off on the field and looked out for me as a Freshman/Rookie.

Community (locker room, brotherhood after the pros…)

Once the game is over, find something team-based and competitive that can fill that void of the locker room. There will never be a perfect replacement but there are plenty of options that should work.

Mindset and body

  • If you want to be great and dominate at a sport you have to be driven to win - without that drive you won’t cut it in any sport.

  • Living in the past won’t lead to greatness.

  • Victim Mentality is cancer to your success.

  • Your body makes you money in the NFL, don't be afraid to invest in it

  • Spend the money on nutrition, training, massage to perform consistently.

Financial success: Why and how?

Be skeptical but open-minded. Know your priorities and what matters to you.

  • Trading is a proven loser’s game. You're competing against robots that can trade faster than you.

  • Leverage and pitfalls: Downfall of many great investors because the market remained irrational longer than they could remain solvent.

  • What I learned since managing my own money: Be a long-term investor and keep it simple. Hedge uncertainty and allocate the rest to compensated sources of return.

  • How I invest my own money (I wouldn’t work somewhere I disagreed with in investment strategy).

What every NFL player should know

Three most important terms

Net Worth. Human Capital. Four Uses of Money.

These three terms make up your financial structure that can and should be optimized to attain the outcomes you desire. To put it simply your net worth is simply your assets (Investments, Homes, etc) minus your debt (liabilities). If you can not grow this number you will never attain financial freedom. Human Capital is just your future earnings. This cannot be ignored for athletes because to realize it is pivotal to financial freedom. Don’t overcomplicate things creating a budget. With any dollar earned you have to pay taxes and then you can give it, save it, or spend it. Keep it simple and know where your annual spending goes and remember savings is investing.

Always be learning

Just because you didn’t grow up with a checking/savings/investment account doesn’t mean you can’t learn. Opening a checking account, investment account, and getting a credit card to build credit is easier than ever due to technology. If you are learning by doing, keep the dollar amounts small and work with someone that will educate you along the way. This applies to investing and business.

Savings rate and why it matters

Don’t be guilted into spending money because your teammates do. You can actually spend more total money over your lifetime if you save and invest so you end up winning in the end. Targeting a 40% savings rate should be the baseline.

Investing 101

There is no free lunch meaning you cannot have returns without taking risk. Keep it simple:

  • Be Long term Focused

  • Diversified

  • Control your costs

Your money is a tool to use to help the people you care about.

There is a difference between being generous and enabling “adult abusers” as Phillip Buchanon names them in his book New Money. Establish clear boundaries and enforce them strictly.

Picking an advisor

Only three things matter:

  1. Independent

  2. Individualized

  3. Integrated
